Gracie Jiu Jitsu teaches the most important techniques, strategies and mindsets that made Gracie Jiu Jitsu successful, first.
The Art of Jiu Jitsu is worth more in every way than all of our athletics combined.
- Theodore Roosevelt*
Gracie Jiu Jitsu delivers on the promise of a smaller, weaker opponent using intelligence over brute strength to survive and defeat a larger more aggressive opponent through time and battle tested techniques and strategies in a way that is more documented and proven than any other martial art in history.
It does not rush you into competition, or make you fodder for higher belts. It focuses on helping a student learn the core movements and tactics work perfectly, as quickly as possible through attention to detail and repetition, feedback, and diligent instruction.
It can higher level students consolodate and re-confirm their perfection of the fundamentals.
*Theodore Roosevelt learned Jiu Jitsu from Yoshiyaki Yamashita, one of the 4 guardians of the Kodokan. One of the other guardians, Tsunejiro Tomita, “The Professor” is Jigoro Kano’s first student at the Kodokan and also the teacher of Mitsuyo Maeda, the teacher of Carlos Gracie Sr. Carlos and his brother Helio, through diligent effort created and proved Gracie Jiu Jitsu to be the most effective form of self defence the world has ever seen.

Jiu Jitsu is used to defend yourself, while controlling the amount of damage done to an aggressor. The Gentle Art is meant to use the techniques that cause an aggressor to tire, make a mistake and fall victim to any number of joint locks, choke holds or controls that a Gracie/ Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner will perfect.
At our academy, Jiu Jitsu is taught first as a way to defend against an attacker, later on as a way to sharpen techniques and roll with someone who also knows Jiu Jitsu.
Although Jiu-Jitsu consists of more than 600 techniques, studies of challenge matches conducted by the Gracie family in the last 80 years show that 36 techniques are used more often and with greater success than all the others combined. Gracie Combatives is the only course that is entirely dedicated to the mastery of these 36 essential techniques. In this course, we use a new training process called Dynamic Reflex Development to take you, regardless of age or athletic ability, from no knowledge to “defence ready” in the least amount of time. In each of the lessons, we’ll teach you two major techniques using a series of simplified drills or Technical Slices. After you perfect each variation of the technique, we’ll teach you how combine them in a Reflex Development Drill. Once your reflexes are strong in the execution of all variations of the techniques, we will show you how to combine the new move with 5-7 previously learned techniques in a Fight Simulation Drill. To optimize learning, and to best prepare you for the Blue Belt, we encourage you to adhere to the curriculum and you’ll graduate to the advanced classes after mastering the core techniques of the art of Jiu Jitsu. By mastering all the techniques in this course, individually and in every possible combination, you will qualify to be tested for promotion to Blue Belt.

The Master Cycle.
Beyond Blue Belt, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu consists of hundreds of advanced techniques, all of which have been organized into a clearly defined, systematic curriculum called the Master Cycle. The Master Cycle is broken down into three levels, one for each belt after blue (purple, brown and black), and promotion to each new belt level requires successful completion of four stripe courses each of which features 50-60 lessons which are broken down into seven positional chapters. The Master Cycle lessons use the same “Technique Slicing” strategy found in the Fundamentals course, but because the techniques are complex, we use a revolutionary training exercise called Rapid Mastery Drills at the end of each class. These drills are practiced along with a variety of Focus Sparring exercises to help internalize the techniques and develop reflexes. Upon perfecting all the techniques in a given stripe course, you may opt to test for the next stripe or simply be promoted on general progress and technical ability and demonstrated knowledge. Once you earn all four stripes on your Blue Belt, you will qualify to test for promotion to Purple Belt.
