Meditation and Breathing

The Gracie Academy was established in Brazil.  Traditional JuJutsu was established in Japan.  West vs East.  The philosphies are different.  Both are educative, both are meant for growth.  Japan uses bowing for greeting and respect.  The west uses a handshake or a hug.

Japanese martial arts practice uses a period of breathing called Mokuso, Gracie Jiu Jitsu has an open, relaxed training environment where questions are encouraged, but no in class breathing or meditation practice.

Which is better?  Many people might appreciate doing some breathing or meditation but many others feel that it is a personal practice and not meant for groups or to be a forced part of the structure of training.
