One of the most common questions new students ask is: "What am I signing up for?" Here's an honest answer.
Months 1–2: Getting Started
You'll learn foundational movements, basic positions, and your first techniques. Everything is cooperative, we play dynamic games that help you learn the technique and take on challenges incrementally, no pressure. Your main job is to show up and stay curious. Celebrate every small win.
For kids: classes focus on fun, movement-based games that teach the principles of Jiu Jitsu while building friendships on the mat.
Months 2–4: Building Skill
Techniques start connecting. You'll begin to see patterns and understand why the movements work, not just how to do them. Your fitness, awareness, and confidence grow alongside your skill. For kids: foundational moves become second nature. Students start showing real confidence in class and — parents often notice — at home and school too.
Months 4–6: Reflex Development
This is where it starts to click. You'll practice Reflex Development Drills — fluid combinations of techniques that train your body to respond without thinking. The difference between knowing a technique and owning it.
Months 6–12: Completing Gracie Combatives
After approximately 6–12 months of consistent training, you'll have covered the complete Gracie Combatives curriculum — the 36 essential techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. At this stage, with your instructor's recommendation, you'll be ready to move into the Master Cycle: the advanced curriculum for blue belts and above.
This Is Just the Beginning
Jiu-jitsu is a lifelong practice. Many of our students have been training for years — some for decades. The techniques evolve, the challenges deepen, and the community grows stronger. The only requirement is that you start.
