New Years Break and Open Mats

Hello Everyone, as we go into the winter break I thought it might be good to remind everyone the value of a good rest!  Adults, 2 stripes and up feel free to come out to open mats; kids, no classes between Dec 24 and Jan 2.  All regular classes will resume Jan.5 and there will be lots of training and promotions and challenges in the new year to come so write down your goals and feel free to share them with me in person, or by email.  Here are some guidelines to help get the most out of your open mat time:

1. Show up 10-15 minutes early.  Make sure nails are clipped (if you can see white, it’s probably too long) and gis are clean.  If your nails need clipped, there are clippers in the washroom.  If you need a clean gi, there are loaner gis outside the washroom.  Get changed and be on the mats stretching on time.

2. Find a partner and drill the last technique you learned.  If there is a name, say the name out loud, share the technique with your partner teach it to them.  Starting off drilling the last technique is the best way to recall, and often gets the ball rolling on tons of other techniques.  Start with the last one you learned.  This is key!

3. Try to drill all the techniques you know from a given position.  The mount, standing, SideMount or the Guard etc.

4. Advanced students, when deciding to begin sparring, should positionally spar for the first 10-15 minutes and spar the position we are focusing on that month.

5. Spar loose and relaxed, allow movement, more learning will be present with more positions.

6. Enjoy, drink lots of water and help sweep and mop the mats when the session is over!  Have fun!
